Origins

EAR WE ARE

In the beginning: ears a little too large, a little too open. Sounds no one seemed to hear, silences no one seemed to listen to. And a fierce desire to share it all.

In Marseille, the FM coverage map of Radio Grenouille revealed a broadcast zone stretching far out over the sea. It was time to take a deep dive into the listener pool — without forgetting the plankton this time.

A few Nuits de la Phaune later, a 24/7 stream lovingly cobbled together from Montpellier — in pure joy and a certain recklessness.
The creature was born.

Since 2013, Phaune Radio has kept on shedding its skin without ever truly letting itself be tamed.
It moves by ear. The path is made by walking.

What comes through

ALIVE TO EVERYTHING

A cabinet of sonic curiosities in perpetual motion, a 24/7 stream hand-composed, where everything that vibrates eventually crosses paths: the minuscule and the immense, the raw and the refined, science and fiction, laughter and vertigo.

From Deleuze to the Ninja Turtles, from ice songs to the Beatles performed by dogs — here, we mix genres without asking permission and turn the airwaves inside out.

So much material to go beyond comprehension, so many ways of being alive.

The stream is only one of the creature’s forms: Phaune also unfolds into podcasts, original works, shared listening sessions, installations, sound walks, mini-FM, backpack radio, workshops and other undisciplined forms.
Wherever sound can open a space, indoors or out.

Always with the same desire: to invent soundtracks that slightly shift reality, to share listening experiences, to pass on gestures, to reveal other ways of hearing.

What matters, in the end, is to tell a horizon. Near or far, plausible or improbable, fragile or powerful, but always in motion. And all the better if, by endlessly proliferating the senses, it leaves something to be desired.

Because sound is flesh to us, and the attention we give it changes everything else. A way of being on the alert. Of becoming a living being among living beings again.

HUMANS & OTHERS

CONSTELLATIONS

Phaune Radio was born from a collective impulse with Floriane Pochon, Amélie Agut, Tony Regnauld, Stéphane Jourdan, Clément Baudet, Laurie Guétat, and those who recognised something early on in this strange little creature.
People come, come back, sometimes leave. The creature carries on.

It works in symbiosis with the sound arts studio Tarabust, and around the original core orbits a constellation of accomplices in ever-shifting geometry, in France and well beyond:  Alain Damasio, Félix BlumeEtienne Noiseau, Jean PoinsignonCheryl Tipp, Marc Namblard, Rodolphe AlexisNicolas PerretCédric AnglaretConnor Walsh, Sarah BoothroydYannick Dauby, Peter Cusack, and many more.

Some offer unreleased pieces, others unearth hidden gems, craft shows, share archives, intuitions, sounds that fit no frame. Phaune Radio is built like this: through affinities, frictions, transmissions, sonic friendships and sensitive contraband.

Along the way, a few nods of recognition: Inrocks top 5 sound creations of the year (2013), Scam Discovery Prize (2014), Beaumarchais grant (2014), SGDL Grand Prize for Radio Fiction with Alain Damasio (2015), Phonurgia selections (2019) and Prix Italia, several Télérama 3T picks. The creature doesn’t chase medals, but it doesn’t turn them down either.
